The Berlin Wall was not primarily an anti-fascist protection barrier. It was built by the East German government in 1961 to prevent its citizens from fleeing to the West. The wall was a symbol of the division between East and West during the Cold War, and its construction was a response to the increasing number of East Germans seeking asylum in West Germany. While the East German government claimed that the wall was built to protect against fascism, its main purpose was to prevent its citizens from leaving for political and economic reasons. **

The GDR, or German Democratic Republic, built the wall as an anti-fascist protection barrier to protect itself from Western attacks because it saw the West as a continuation of the fascist threat that Germany had faced during World War II. The GDR believed that the West, particularly West Germany, was being influenced by former Nazis and was a threat to the socialist state they were trying to build. By framing the wall as an anti-fascist protection barrier, the GDR sought to justify its actions as necessary for self-defense against Western aggression and to rally support for its socialist ideology. **
